    Supplies Needed

    • Ask students to brainstorm a list of the different types of gardens. Write the list on a large sheet of paper and display it in the classroom. Some examples include a vegetable garden, a flower garden, and a rock garden.
    • Have students write “buggy” poems! Ask each student to write a four-line poem about bugs. The poem could describe the way a bug moves, the way a bug looks, etc. Have students write their poems on colorful sheets of paper and post the poems around the classroom.
    • Ask students to write the steps explaining how to plant a garden. Have students use transition words, such as first, next, and last, in their writing. Ask students to read their directions out loud and have others judge if any of the steps were left out.
    • Ask students to help you list the different body parts of a bug—its body segments, legs, antennae, eyes, etc. Discuss the function of each body part. Talk about how insects have distinct body structures that serve specific functions. Brainstorm a list of other insects and their unique body structures.

    1. Cut out flower shapes and bug shapes from sheets of construction paper.
    2. Decorate the flowers and the bugs using Elmer’s 3D Washable Paint Pens™   and paint. Let the paint dry completely.
    3. Cut a sheet of construction paper into small 1” by 3” strips. Fold each strip back and forth in small sections to create an accordion fold.
    4. Attach one end of the folded strip to the back of a flower shape or a bug shape with glue. Attach the other end to a sheet of green construction paper. This will make the bugs and the flowers pop off of the page.
    5. Decorate your 3D bug garden using Elmer’s 3D Washable Paint Pens™ and Paintastics™ paint pens. Let the paint dry completely.
    6. Display your garden for others to enjoy!
